Superintendent’s Corner
Dr. Silvia Ibarra shares helpful tips on how
students can deal with stress.
any students experience stress due to the many responsibilities
Mplaced on them. Common sources of student stress include:
• School
• Homework
• Extracurricular activities
• Social challenges
• Transitions (e.g., transitioning from elementary to Junior High, grad-
uating, etc.)
• Relationships
• Work
These stressors are common and part of being a student. Many
students feel that there is nothing they can do to relieve stress. Below are some recommendations to help stu-
dents cope with student stress.
Get Enough Sleep
Students need enough sleep to be productive and be better learners. Lack of sleep may cause students to feel
tired and lose focus. Students should sleep at least 8 hours a day,
Take Calming Breaths
A quick way to calm down is to practice breathing exercises. Taking deep breaths when stressed can help stu-
dents calm down and feel more relaxed.
Exercise Regularly
Students spend most of their day sitting down. A terrific way to reduce stress is to exercise. Students should find
time after school to get at least 30 minutes of exercise.
Listen to Music
Listening to music is another wonderful way to reduce stress. Students can take time to listen to their favorite
melodies, or music that is intended for relaxation such as classical music or sounds of nature music.

Get Organized
Students should keep their organizational space at school free of
clutter. Whether it be your backpack, locker, or desk, it should be tidy
and organized. Having your instructional resources organized helps
students be prepared for their studies. 8
Eat a Healthy Diet
Eating a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables helps stu-
dents keep focus and mental energy. A diet that is not balanced may
cause students to feel either drained or lightheaded.
Stay Positive
Students should practice positivity and believe that things will work
out. Studies have shown that having a positive outlook on life makes
people feel better and experience better circumstances.
Speak to Your School Counselor
If all else fails, visit your counselor. School counselors are trained to work with students who are experiencing
stress. They will supply added resources and recommendations.
