SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Classes
for PARENTS
In today’s global society, becoming bilingual is more important than ever. Clearly parents who become fluent in English and
familiar with other cultures will have distinct advantages in their careers and their personal lives as well. More importantly,
parents can establish a home environment to support the education of their children.
14 SUCCESS, NOTHING LESS SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Title I Part A funds make it possible to provide ESL classes, and family literacy for parents throughout the school year. Classes
will empower parents and bring them into the school system in order to more readily participate in their children’s educa-
tion. These classes provide an opportunity to build trust and to encourage parent participation in the educational process.
Parents who are empowered literate citizens and who become proficient in English themselves will be more confident and
capable in supporting their children and participating in many decisions that affect their children’s education.
Parents learn English via listening, speaking, reading and writing activities and are grouped for instruction according to En-
glish proficiency levels to intensify and target instruction. Parents receive oral language development and reading resources
in English which can be taken home for additional practice. Parents are also encouraged to practice reading at home, have
home libraries and provide simulating experiences that contribute to student achievement.
Compliance with ESSA
(Every Student Succeeds Act)
It is very important to note that Family and Community Engagement
and parent outreach activities, such as these ESL Classes for Parents,
have been activities which we proposed on our 2017-2018 ESSA
grant request to the Texas Education Agency.
